Big day around the old homestead

Written by Johannah on December 4th, 2009

It’s snowed all day long.  Seriously.  In Houston.  Snow.  Also, today I found y first egg in my chicken coop.  And I rescued an orphan chicken stranded out in the snow and ice.  I’m serious about that, too.  A friend was in the neighborhood and asked us if we were missing an chickens.  All our were accounted for, but there was one looking cold near by.  When Jeff drove home he was it on a corner near our house and we decided to go get it.  Being freezing didn’t make it any easier to catch.  I chased it through the snow, back and forth across the street

, and almost into a drainage ditch.  I finally caught the little sucker.  I’m a supperior chicken wrangler.  It was cold, hungry, and thirsty when I get it home.  I might have to build a bigger run with all these chicken.

Fall update and baby chicks!

Written by Johannah on October 18th, 2009

Here’s a few fall garden photos, and, of course, photos of the new Americauna chicks I just got.  Crossing my fingers that they are all girls this time.  I can’t wait to get blue eggs.

Getting started in the Fall Garden

Written by Johannah on August 16th, 2009

It’s the middle of August, but around here it’s already time to start the Fall garden.  A very hot, dry spell killed most of the Spring and Summer a little bit early.  I think that Fall might be my favorite time of year around here.  The weather will start to cool sometime in September, a long slide towards a little bit chilly in late November.  I love fall produce.  Another round of tomatoes, followed by lettuce, cabbage, and broccoli (if all goes well).  I’ve already planted tomatoes, corn, sweet potatoes, green beans, and green onion.  I’ve started the broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage under lights because it’s still too hot outside for them.  Pretty soon I’ll plant carrots, beets,  lettuce, various greens, potatoes, turnips, and rutabagas.  I’m sure I’m forgetting some other stuff, too.

Also, we’ve been getting our chickens properly set up.  We bought a large wooden dog house and adapted it.  I hope we’ll finish the permanent tractor run today.  I think that one of our fluffy little pullets might not have been as advertised.  I think Elizabeth might really be a Bert.  I guess it will either start laying eggs, or crowing.  Then we’ll know.

On another front, Nora, the new pup has recently been very sick.  She started coughing and we thought we were being on the safe side taking her into the vet.  It turned out that she had a pretty nasty case of pneumonia.  Poor baby.  Two kinds of antibiotics later, she’s starting to feel better.  Things can turn so fast for a puppy, I’m glad we took her in when we did.

Well, on to the photos . . . .

It's huge!

It's huge!

Actually, I guess it’s an edible gourd.  Either way, it’s huge, it’s green, and it tasted much like zucchini, but a bit firmer.  It’s also immune to squash vine borers which we have in spades.  It’s Cucuzza.  Hurrah!

Room for one more.

Well, we went and did it.  We got a new puppy.  A little girl Tibetan Terrier named Nora, to go with our Nick.  Isn’t she just the cutest thing ever?  She’s tiny, but not putting up with any crap.  Adorable.

Woo hoo!  I won something!

Here are my brand new, fancy pants Ethel gardening gloves that I won from www.digfortexas.com .  Aren’t they just the prettiest?  I don’t usually mind dirt under my nails, but I HATE mosquito bites on my fingers and the back of my hands.  These should take care of that little problem.  And maybe I’ll get used to not having dirty nails . . .

I am the proud mama of 3 little Plymouth Rock Chicks.  Two Barred Rocks and one Partridge Rock.  I’ve named them Mary, Elisabeth, and Jane after 3 queens of England who never had children.  Mary is the most outgoing and hops onto my hand when ever I open the cage door.
